Fine Duchesse Brisée, French, Directoire, c. 1800

Fine Duchesse Brisée, or recamier, French, Directoire, c. 1800.  Comprising two  bergères, this form emerged in the late 18th century as a modular chaise alternative. Carved mahogany frame with fluted legs and paneled sides. A refined example of the type, balancing comfort with neoclassical restraint.  Upholstered in cream raw silk. 35 1/2 x 28 x 44 in. (90.2 x 71.1 x 111.8 cm.) and 30 x 28 x 37 in. (76.2 x 71.1 x 94 cm.); Seat height including cushion: 18 in.
