17th-18th Century Carved Polychrome Sculpture, Figurehead

Beautiful 17th-18th Century Carved figure of a maiden or saint, possibly a ship’s figurehead, probably Portuguese, in draped clothing.  Her face is realistically rendered in a gentle expression, her draping and hair and clothing forming a harmonious flowing form throughout.  There are traces of original paint and gilding throughout.   Found in the South of France.
