Exceptional, large 16th Century Biot oil vessel jar, exhibited for years in the museum of Biot, has stamps of the end of the 16th C. The jar and its mark 'Cross of Malta' is listed in the book "Jarres de Biot."
These gigantic jars, a marvel of craftsmanship with a waiting time of 1-2 years, were used for transporting oil throughout the Mediterranean basin. The famous Biot jar was one of few ateliers that marked each jar with symbols denoted to a specific potter and/or the client.
