Walter Whitcomb Thompson was born in Palatka, Florida in 1882. A painter, lecturer and teacher, he studied at the University of Florida and the New School of Design in Boston. He was a member of various art associations along the eastern seaboard including the North Shore Art Association and the American Artists Professional League and was president of the Beaufort Fine Art Association. Thompson was a prominent participant in the preservation and continuance of art in and around Beaufort, South Carolina. He co-founded and directed the Beaufort Art Colony and taught at local public schools. He died in 1948.‘ (info from Williams American, Art & Antiques).
